A BIT ABOUT ME
KANTAN was born from Hisham’s deep love for the diverse regional flavors of his homeland, Malaysia. After saying goodbye to the corporate world, he embraced his passion for cooking, determined to share the rich culinary heritage of Malaysia with Melbourne.
Today, Hisham is proud to offer a range of authentic regional Malaysian dishes, with a special focus on the east coast, where his parents' roots lie. Each dish is a reflection of his journey and dedication to bringing the vibrant tastes of Malaysia to the city he now calls home.
The name ‘Kantan’ comes from the striking pink ginger torch flower, an essential ingredient in traditional Malay and Peranakan dishes like Assam Laksa and Nasi Kerabu. With its unique fragrance and peppery zing, this flower adds a touch of magic to every meal—just like the experience we hope to bring to your table.

Kantan's journey began during the challenging times of stage 4 lockdown in September 2020. Back then, we started small, offering just currypuffs and coffee to get by. As restrictions eased slightly, we added Hainanese Chicken Rice to the mix, serving it for just two weeks. Since those early days, our menu has blossomed, featuring a variety of beloved Malaysian dishes like Mee Siam, Nasi Lemak, Roti Jala, Curry Laksa, our house-made Teh Tarik, and more.
When the lease ended at our original location, we saw an opportunity to find a new space that could support the growth of Kantan, from retail and catering to our restaurant service.
Now, in September 2024, we're excited to have found a new home, still in Fitzroy, with all the makings of a proper restaurant. With your old favorites and an updated menu, we hope you'll find something to love every time you visit. We’re humbled by the support and can't wait to welcome you back!
